Sensei Scott Cohen

Cohen executes shuto ukeScott Cohen began his bugei (martial arts) training in 1978, studying directly under Shihan Paul Arel at the IKA Hombu (World H.Q.) in CT. Still an active student through the Yudanshakai (Black Belt Association), Sensei Cohen holds the rank of Yondan (4th degree black) in Jukido Jujitsu. In 1989 Mr. Cohen began training in Kokondo Karate at Hombu under Shihan Arel. He also trained intensively with Sensei Daniel Cohen focussing on kata and bunkai, and was significantly influenced by Master Robert Longo, Master Greg Howard, and Master Tom Wood. He currently holds the rank of Yondan (4th degree black) in Kokondo Karate

From 1986 to 1991, Mr. Cohen served as assistant instructor at the Kingswood-Oxford Jukido Academy, at the Hombu dojo in Newington and throughout greater Hartford with Shihan Arel. He earned his Jukido Instructor's Certification in 1989, becoming the IKA's youngest Chief Instructor by founding the Simsbury Kokondo Academy. In 1991, Sensei Cohen turned over the SKA to Sensei Rob Robert. Ten of Mr. Cohen's original SKA students later achieved Jukido ranks ranging from Shodan (1st degree black) to Sandan (3rd degree black). From 1991 to 1995, he taught Kokondo and Jukido to students and faculty at Quinnipiac University and at several dojos in the New Haven, CT area. Mr. Cohen gained invaluable experience from working with special needs individuals when teaching Jukido at The American School for the Deaf to students, parents, and faculty from 1998 to 2000.

Cohen trains on the maki waraCurrently, Sensei Cohen operates two dojos within the Connecticut Kokondo & Jukido Academy, including karate and Jukido classes at Big Sky Fitness in Newington. Sensei Cohen was invited back to Quinnipiac University in the Fall of 2000 to teach an accredited Jujitsu class as an Adjunct Professor of Physical Education. In addition to regular classes, Sensei Cohen conducts interactive seminars on women's self-defense and general safety, and has lead workshops for allied health professionals, Girl Scouts, and other community groups. 

In July 1998, at the request of Shihan Arel and the invitation of Finland Kokondo Chief Instructor Sensei Vesa Toropainen, Sensei Cohen accompanied Shihan Arel to Finland and assisted him in teaching the Finland National Seminar. He returned to Finland in November 1998 with Sensei Dan Cohen, where they conducted instructor training and classes for all ages and levels. He has since traveled regularly with Shihan for annual seminars, including private advanced training in Finland and Belgium. June 2002 marked Sensei Cohen's 5th visit as a guest instructor in Finland.  He has played a key role in training Finnish Kokondo members in Jukido both in Europe and during their visits to America.

A safety advocate with no major injuries in 13 years of teaching, Sensei Cohen maintains current First Aid and CPR certification, and in 1995 earned a pistol and revolver license to more safely and completely instruct students in the disarming and operation of street weapons. During the 1999 Finland trip, Sensei Cohen was privileged to receive an exclusive weapons presentation and lesson conducted by the directors of Daifu and Falk Security. The interactive training included the use of handguns, shotguns, and rifles at a military practice course. In 2002, Mr. Cohen was asked by the Town Manager of Newington, CT to participate in a focus group and interview panel to facilitate the selection of a new Chief of Police, who was sworn in this Spring.

Dunne in Chicago '2000Twice honored by the IKA for loyalty and contributions to the system at the Annual Awards Banquet, Sensei Cohen is featured in The Art of the Ancients, a documentary of martial arts with a focus on Kokondo and Jukido. He is also featured in the new edition of Sankosho (guidebook) performing kata and self-defense, and is a key participant in the project to produce Shihan's book on Jushin, The Center Line Principle. A member of the IKA Executive Committee, a promotional judge, and Jukido shiai (competition) referee, Sensei Cohen enjoyed participating in randori, the less emphasized sport facet of Jukido. He has earned first place honors at the regional level ten times, and was the first middle-weight competitor to defeat a heavy-weight for the Grand Championship. Sensei Cohen has performed in demonstrations since 1982, and with the encouragement and guidance of Shihan Arel, he broke a world record in tamashi wari (board breaking). The current record is 99 (previously 93) individually broken boards (12"x12"x 6/8") in 60 seconds. Mr. Cohen has been covered by over a dozen local, national, and international newspapers and magazines, and has been interviewed and performed on statewide radio and television including CBS-TV, WTIC-AM, and WRCH-FM.

Aside from bujutsu, Scott is a fitness and nutrition enthusiast who enjoys individual and team sports, music, and travel.
He is a former two-time wrestling team Captain, a three-time Central CT State University camp tournament Champion, and a Western New England State Champion. A graduate of Quinnipiac University, Mr. Cohen earned a BS in Health Science. Professionally a Retail Executive, he serves as Vice President / Director of FootPrints Fashion Footwear, Inc., with a focus on administration and marketing. He resides in West Hartford, CT with his wife Teressa and their daughter Gabriella.
