Master Steve Dunne began
his martial arts training with Shihan Arel in Kyokushinkai Karate
in Connecticut, USA in the late 1960's. Shortly after Mr. Arel founded
the International Kokondo Karate Association in late 1970,
Mr. Dunne was the first person to pass his Shodan test and earn a black
belt in Kokondo Karate.
While also an active Jukido Jujitsu
practitioner, Mr. Dunne became known for his powerful karate
dynamics, particularly his keri waza- kicking techniques.
Having taught with Shihan at the Hombu dojo, Mr. Dunne opened a series
of dojos in Connecticut and New York in the 1970's and 1980's and
helped expand Kokondo throughout the Northeastern US at many
demonstrations and tournaments, often demonstrating his trademark
Yoko Tobi Geri (flying side kick.) In 1982, Mr. Dunne earned the
rank of Godan, 5th degree black belt and the title of Kokondo
Master.
After a serious bicycle accident kept him out of the dojo
for many years, Master Dunne returned to the IKA in 2000 to
celebrate Shihan Arel's 50th year in Budo, and has since made a
full recovery and returned to active status. Master Dunne is once
again an IKA Director, serving as the International Kokondo
Liaison. In the last 2 years, he has taught seminars in Finland,
Brussels and all across the United States, as well as opened a new
dojo in the Greater Chicago, IL area.
Professionally, Mr. Dunne is
a research physicist working for UOP in Chicago, and he is one of
the world's foremost authorities on molecular sivs. His wife
Pamela is also a Kokondo karate black belt, and they have three
children: Joe, Jim and Rachael.
