Mr.
Postman studied martial arts while growing up in Vermont and began his
Kokondo training in 1999 at the Brandeis Kokondo Academy under Sensei
Dan Cohen. He currently
holds the rank of Shodan in Kokondo Karate and is also approaching black
belt in Jukido Jujitsu. He
particularly enjoys self-defense, emphasizing kicking techniques, and
thoroughly enjoys kata—especially Bassai, Konni and Gojushiho.
He is also a former kata and team-kumite champion in traditional
inter-collegiate competition. In
2001, Mr. Postman put his construction experience to work for the BKA
when he designed and built SMACK, a unique makiwara (striking board).
Featuring 6 separate punching posts of traditional dimensions
mounted on a reinforced steel platform, SMACK enables up to 12 Kokondo-ka
to practice full power techniques at the same time.
After graduating from Brandeis University in 2001 with a B.A. in
Psychology, Mr. Postman spent six months working for a Public Relations
consulting firm in Beijing, China and travelling throughout the Far
East. He now lives in
Boston and continues to train at the BKA as well as in CT as part of the
Yudanshakai. He is an
assistant teacher at all of the Boston area dojos. Outside the dojo, Mr. Postman enjoys teaching Hatha Yoga
which he has practiced since 1995 and works as a legislative aide in the
Massachusetts State Senate.
